For Josh Gardner and Jared Stiver, two avid golfers from Wyoming, the opportunity to play Landmand was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The course, with its vast, undulating terrain and unique features, offered a challenge like no other. From the moment they stepped onto the first tee, they knew they were in for something special.
What makes Landmand so captivating is its sheer scale. Carved out of the treeless Loess Hills, the course spans nearly 600 acres, making it four times larger than the average 18-hole layout. The fairways are as wide as football fields, and the bunkers are so vast they could swallow a golfer whole. But it's the greens that truly set Landmand apart.
Greens of Epic Proportions
The greens at Landmand are nothing short of extraordinary. Averaging more than double the size of typical American greens, some are four to six times larger. The 17th green, at three-quarters of an acre, rivals the revered Old Course at St. Andrews. Gradients of up to 25% add an extra layer of difficulty, making approach shots a true test of precision.
"You could fit seven Powder Horn greens on one of those monsters," Stiver exclaimed. Gardner added, "Greens the size of Walmart! It's like skiing down a blue run with a helmet on."
Battling the Elements
Landmand's greens feature windsocks instead of flags, a clever design choice to combat the notorious local winds. The course's scorecard even includes two handicaps dedicated to the winds, one for southwest gales and another for nor'easters. Gardner and Stiver experienced both, and it showed.
"Wyoming boys, we thought we could handle the wind, but we were wrong," Gardner admitted. Stiver agreed, suggesting golfers from windier parts of Wyoming might fare better.
A National Obsession
The challenge and uniqueness of Landmand have created a national obsession. With only 11,000 tee times available each New Year's Eve, they're snapped up in under an hour. Golfers across the country eagerly await their chance to play, and for those who secure a spot, the reality can be daunting.
Gardner and Stiver, however, had the luxury of four full days to tackle the beast. They entered the final round in 32nd place and finished strongly, climbing to 19th. Despite the bruises to their golf egos, they knew their experience was exceptional.
Beyond the Golf
The adventure extended beyond the golf course. Owner Will Andersen, along with Golf Channel host Gary Williams and the course architects, shared the history and concept of Landmand, giving Gardner and Stiver a deeper appreciation for the course. Stiver was particularly impressed by Andersen's graciousness, remembering his name and greeting him warmly.
To show their appreciation, the duo presented Andersen with a unique gift: a spur with hearts cut into it, crafted by renowned Sheridan craftsman Tom Balding. They also gave him a copper shot glass from their hometown Mint Bar. Andersen was touched, having never received a gift from the thousands of golfers who had played his course.
A Taste of Wyoming
"We wanted to bring a piece of Wyoming to Landmand," Gardner explained. And that they did. Their experience, from the golf to the hospitality, left a lasting impression. Despite their initial reaction of "never again," Gardner and Stiver know their golf-induced PTSD will subside, and they'll be ready to face the challenge once more.
Back home, they're enjoying their moment of golf envy fame, although Gardner's torn rotator cuff has put their mission to play every Wyoming course on hold for now.
